What are Tarot cards and why are they so special?

What are Tarot Cards?

Tarot Cards are a powerful, useful and intuitive tool of divination. The common playing deck you may be familiar with (hearts, spades, clubs and diamonds) were derived from the earliest form of Tarot cards from way back in the 15th Century (or earlier!!). A deck of Tarot Cards consist of 78 cards made up of 4 suits, 14 cards in each suit plus 22 Trump cards. The 22 Trump cards are considered the most powerful and mysterious. Each of the cards contains an image and each image is suggestive of a hidden truth and can assist in guiding one along their spiritual path if they so choose.

The first historical record of Tarot cards date from the Middle Ages, but the ancient symbolism and iconography contained in the cards are considered to be much older. Their true history is actually unknown and it is something that is still widely debated amongst scholars.

There are many types of Tarot Decks available today and they mostly follow the format outlined above. The main difference is the variety of creative images in the vast world of Tarot art! It is really lovely to see different perspectives in the iconography, symbolism and style of the images.

Most Tarot readers will choose to use a deck that they feel inspired by and are ‘in tune’ with. Very often they will possess and use more than one deck. As a Tarot Reader, I personally use the Tarot cards as a tool to inspire my healing energy in order to help others uncover the psychic and intuitive ability that lies dormant in all of us.
