Uvluv "Afterglow"
Uvluv is a 4 piece rock band consisting of Derek Harman on Vocals & Guitar, Kona Ossana on Drums, Christian Lucy on Keyboards and Jake Bills on Bass.
Their sound can be described as cinematic, soulful, calculated and dynamic with thoughtful memorandums embedded intentionally into each track.
Last year Uvluv released ‘Tranquilize’, a love note to self awareness, reflection, creation, freedom and the abundance of love in letting go. It captivates the listener with strong vocal melodies, dense wavy rhythms and generous, active guitar lines.
‘Afterglow’ is the perfect follow up. It is a yearning, poetic piece that nestles itself comfortably in heavy themes such as grief and finding hope in hopelessness. As introduced gently in track ‘Prologue’, like the beginning of a meditation, Derek sings “All that I ask is to listen and relax”.
Lyrically, we’re introduced to the main protagonist Mr. Melody, who inspires (much of Grace and Harmony’s) journey through intense healing to discover exhaultation in the “Afterglow”.
Mr. Melody seems to be a benevolent character metaphorically walking alongside the listener as we navigate themes such as loneliness, melancholy, and mourning to eventually finding solace, peace and beauty.
These sobering themes are apparent while inspiring an overarching optimistic message. Like the rainbow after a storm, the listener gets to experience the atmosphere in a full scope of color and contrast while discovering for themselves what it means to feel warm again after the shock of a cold experience.
It’s equal parts aching and painful as it is dreamy, warm and therapeutic. This work is a great example of understanding how to work with these energies in a gentle and poignant way instead of ignoring them or forcing an outcome. This process is natural and exemplified well within the elements of ‘Afterglow’.
We heard ‘Tranquilize’ with it’s raw and encouraging cadences (which was wonderful) but since the addition of Christian on keys on ‘Afterglow’, Uvluv has really flourished into a gorgeous and spacious experience. Keys really bring a bright and light contrast to Derek’s powerful vocal lines and pairs perfectly with the deep dissonance and jazzy essences of the rhythm section.
‘Afterglow’ is a welcoming meditative narrative with a concise, heavenly and intentional tone. I highly recommend every human on planet earth to listen to Uvluv.
